Heart Saver First Aid

Course Description

This course is an American Heart Association accredited video-based, instructor-led course that teaches critical skills to manage an emergency in the first few minutes. This training is provided by certified AHA Instructors belonging to the medical field with various levels of expertise. The course trains participants first aid basics for the most common first aid emergencies, including how to recognize them, how to call for help, and how to perform lifesaving skills. Participants attending the training will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively deliver emergency first aid techniques and care prior to the arrival of emergency medical services at the site of an incident.

Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) and the 2020 AHA Guidelines for First Aid.


Learning Objectives:

After successfully completing this course, students should be able to :

  • List the priorities, roles, and responsibilities of first aid rescuers
  • Describe the key steps in first aid
  • Remove protective gloves
  • Find the problem
  • Describe the assessment and first aid actions for the following life-threatening conditions: heart attack, difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding, shock, and stroke Use an epinephrine pen
  • Control bleeding and bandaging
  • Recognize elements of common injuries Recognize elements of common illnesses
  • Describe how to find information on preventing illness and injury
  • Recognize the legal questions that apply to first aid rescuers
  • Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival
  • Recognize when someone needs CPR
  • Describe how to perform CPR with help from others
  • Give effective breaths using mouth-to-mouth or a mask for all age groups
  • Demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult
  • Perform high-quality CPR for adult, child, and infant.
  • Demonstrate how to use an AED on a child
  • Demonstrate how to help a choking adult, child, and infant
